2008 TIME Award Winner

San Francisco, Calif., Feb. 9, 2008 – D.H.Moss, Dealer Principal of Tom Scott Motors, a Toyota, Scion dealership in Nampa, Idaho, was honored today for his nomination for the 2008 TIME Magazine Dealer of the Year award. Moss was one of a select group of dealers from across the country honored at this year’s National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) convention in San Francisco today. The announcement of this year’s Dealer of the Year, and finalists, was made by Ed Mc- Carrick, President & Worldwide Publisher of TIME Magazine, and Johann Finkelmeier, Vice President and General Manager of Original Equipment Tires, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, at the opening business meeting of convention, which is attended by more than 25,000 individuals involved in the automobile industry.

The TIME Magazine Dealer of the Year award is the automobile industry’s most prestigious and highly coveted award for car dealers. Recipients are among the nation’s most successful auto dealers. However, they must also demonstrate a long-standing commitment to effective community service. Moss, 50, was chosen to represent the Idaho Automobile Dealers Association in the national competition— one of only 52 automobile dealers, from more than 19,500 nationwide, nominated for the 39th annual award. The award is sponsored by TIME Magazine in association with Goodyear, and in cooperation with NADA. A panel of faculty members from the University Of Michigan Graduate School Of Business Administration selects each finalist.

A young D.H. Moss was on his way to a start in the retail business with a regional chain of eateries, when his car broke down in Boise. On his walk home, Moss passed an auto dealership with a “help wanted” sign in the window. He walked in, met a sales manager who saw the right stuff, and walked out with a new job—and a new career path. Soon, Moss met Tom Scott, the founder of Tom Scott Motors, and the man who would become his mentor. Moss went to work for Scott and, in the past 25 years, has risen from a salesman to Dealer Principal of Tom Scott Motors, while helping to grow the dealership from its roots as a small town dealer to a formidable position as the leading Toyota dealer in Southern Idaho. In addition to his business successes, Moss and his dealership have also supported a wide range of community organizations and causes, granting $150,000 in annual community contributions, largely for schools, scholarships and driver’s education programs. In addition,

Moss donates 45 cars annually to dozens of community charities. Still, he cites as his most meaningful civic contribution something others might view more modestly: a program that gives bikes and helmets to third-graders with perfect school attendance. “To track the advancement in skills and knowledge, and most heart-warningly, the look in their eyes, for these often at-risk kids when they receive their bikes, and the academic recognition it represents, is a wonderful feeling,” said Moss. Nominated for the TIME Magazine Dealer of the Year award by Trent Wright, CEO of the Idaho Automobile Dealers Association, D.H. Moss lives in Star, Idaho, with his wife, Margaret. The couple has five children and four grandchildren.
